Multi-hyphenate Gillian Anderson gets real about letting go of shame and proudly declaring that she is, ahem, “fucking worth it.”

Gillian Anderson isn’t afraid to go after what she wants—and she wants you to feel the same. Now a year into her role as an ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, the 58-year-old actor and author continues to find new ways to channel the confident, take-no-BS attitude she exudes onscreen.

, a collection of women’s spiciest fantasies sourced from around the world. The overwhelmingly positive response to the book prompted Anderson to release a follow-up,, which just hit shelves and features steamy stories from women aged 18 to 80. Anderson also launched her functional-drinks brand,“Little by little, I’ve been pursuing these paths where I end up getting to have a platform to talk about things that I feel quite strongly about,” Anderson says over Zoom.

“Why not lean into that as opposed to saying ‘No, that’s got nothing to do with my acting career’? It feels like it’s important and it’s being of service to continue to have these conversations. ”, the sequel to Want. Both books celebrate female desire, which is so often wrapped up in shame.

What drew you to the subject?. had been approached by a lot of publishers to do a book potentially from the perspective of a sex therapist. And she didn’t even pass on to me because she knew I wouldn’t be interested. But then she thought, ‘What if we did what Nancy Friday did—a book asking women to talk about their deepest desires but anonymously? ’ I thought, ‘That’s a really good idea.

’ The thing I was the most interested in after having spent time reading Nancy Friday’s book was the level of shame that existed in the ’70s for women. I wanted to know if in the age of porn this supposed modern freedom is something that is real? Or does the shame still exist underneath all of that? It turns out that it does.

” Whether through your books or your line of functional drinks, you seem to really champion the idea of pleasure. Why is this important to you?

“For a lot of people, is a dirty , and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to put the name on the can. Because what is dirty about women’s pleasure? The only way we’re going to eradicate shame around ‘G spot’ is by saying it out loud and declaring that pleasure for women is not a bad thing. Which to L’Oréal and its declaration of ‘Because I’m worth it.

’ When I was first asked to become an ambassador, I knew that I’d be needing to say that line, and I thought: ‘Oh, my God, I can’t say that. It sounds cheesy to me. ’ And then I saw the documentary about Ilon Specht, the woman who came up with the phrase, and she’s so radical. And it felt like such a pro-feminist statement to be able to say ‘Actually, Ifucking worth it!

’ I feel good enough about myself internally that I am able to declare that and it doesn’t feel silly or shameful. ” You recently starred in a L’Oréal Paris Lesson of Worth talking about getting older. Why did you choose this topic?

“I thought, ‘If I were to say something about eliminating shame around aging and actually making the most of the final chapters of one’s life, what would it be? ’ Nowadays, even women in their 20s are starting to take steps to eradicate the signs of aging. And, you know, that’s fine. Everybody can do whatever they want with their face.

But I do think it perpetuates a feeling of something being wrong with oneself, and I think there’s something problematic about that. And so part of what the Lesson of Worth was about was that there’s nothing to be afraid of. There’s something radical today about making the choice to age naturally. The next step could be that we start to open our arms to and accept that it’s going to happen and that it’s a good thing.

”“I used to be pretty self-obsessed in my 20s. When I would do photo shoots, I would feel overweight and uncomfortable in my own body and my own skin and I would feel shame. I look back at those photos and think ‘Oh, my gosh, all the time that was wasted with the negative thinking when you were beautiful—you spent all that time feeling bad, and that is such a shame.

’ If I had spent less time self-obsessing, I probably would have been happier, and that happiness would have radiated from the inside out. I would have given off a different energy than I sometimes did back then, which often furious and trying to hide. ”L’ORÉAL PARIS AGE PERFECT LE DUO AGE DEFYING SERUM AND AGE PERFECT MIDNIGHT CREAM “Lately, I’ve been using the Le Duo serum—which makes your skin feel really silky—and Midnight Cream.

I didn’t necessarily have any luck with other creams in my life, and I just assumed that wouldn’t really make that much of a difference. But I have to say, they’re really great. When you wake up in the morning, you really do feel deeply moisturized and your skin feels really smooth and definitely softer and firmer.

Those two things can actually be true at the same time. are meant to smooth wrinkles and all that, but what I notice is a level of radiance, and that, to me, signals health and well-being. ”No Steady Paycheque?
