Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished second in NBA MVP voting, discusses Canada's record performance at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and Paris Olympics. While Canada secured a historic bronze medal at the World Cup, their Olympic campaign ended in a disappointing fifth-place finish after a quarter-final loss to France.
Hamilton’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished second in NBA MVP voting for the 2023-24 season, the best performance among a record-high 27 Canadians in the league. His Oklahoma City Thunder had a disappointing second-round exit in the NBA’s Western Conference playoffs, and Canada ’s men’s senior team finished fifth at the Paris Olympics .
The Canadians were a perfect 3-0 of the group stage at the Olympics this past summer, advancing out of Group A as the third seed in the knockout stage. Then Canada ran afoul of France in the quarters for the disappointing fifth-place finish. “In four years, you never know what will happen, where I was four years ago, and where I’ll be four years from now, but it’s a special opportunity,” said Gilgeous-Alexander. “If, God willing, I’m around for that opportunity, I’ll definitely approach it a little bit different.”
“It’s continued to go up, and it’s not going to be a linear progression to the top. There’s going to be some hiccups and bumps along the way,” said Olynyk. “But we’ve got a great group of young guys, talented, and some even younger talented guys coming up in the mix. The Thunder were the top seed in the NBA’s Western Conference with a 57-25 record but were upset by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round.
