What, exactly, are the San Francisco Giants doing?
None of this makes sense. This was the perfect time for a soft rebuild with an eye towards reloading the roster in free agency this winter. Was the market for Rodon so weak that the Giants couldn’t even get one high-level prospect for him? Hard to believe, even with Rodon’s status as a rental.
How about Pederson? Or Flores? Or even Brandon Belt? Hanging on to them is understandable if you take the Giants’ statements about contending for the Wild Card at face value, but that’s hard to do. This team simply isn’t good enoughThe Giants should have tried to gather as many prospects as they could, even if the returns were less than what they had hoped, and crossed their fingers that one of two of them would be ready to contribute next year.
But instead, the Giants stood pat and embraced the malaise. They aren’t close to either the Dodgers or Padres, who both seem to be operating in a different universe. They’re stuck in quicksand, unable to commit to a full rebuild and holding out hope they’re actually a playoff team and their eyes have been lying to them for the past few months.
The worst thing the Giants could have done at the trade deadline was nothing. And unfortunately, that’s exactly what they did. Dave Tobener is a lifelong Giants fan whose family has had season tickets for over 30 years. He’s been lucky enough to never miss a World Series game in the City in his lifetime, still isn’t completely over 2002 and lives and dies with the Giants every year.
