The Giants set their 53-man roster Tuesday and they made a few surprising cuts in doing so.

, Matt Breida and rookie Eric Gray would make the team, but it was surprising to learn in the early afternoon that Gary Brightwell was going to be back for a third straight season. It’s not that Brightwell performed poorly last season. He actually was quite good in his limited role, carrying the ball 31 times for 141 yards while also catching five balls for 39 yards.

It seems entirely possible that Brightwell will not be around for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.General manager Joe Schoen heavily focused on upgrading the defensive line during the offseason and it showed that he succeeded on cutdown day. The Giants kept six players with the odd-man out being Ryder Anderson, who went down Aug. 3 with a triceps injury.

D.J. Davidson, a fifth-round pick last year, made the team despite missing most of training camp as he recovered from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers in London. He was activated from the PUP list last week, but did not play in the final preseason game against the Jets.
