The Astros' recent offensive woes continued as they closed their homestand with a second straight loss to the Giants at Minute Maid Park.
Peter Putila, general manager of the San Francisco Giants gets his 2022 World Series ring from Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada during batting practice before the start of a MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 in Houston. The Astros are one game above .500 overall but three games below break-even at Minute Maid Park nearly a fifth of the way into the season, and that has manager Dusty Baker seeking a home remedy.
The Giants defeated the Astros 4-2 in a crowded house during a rare midweek day game, with many of the fans on hand to claim a replica Jose Altuve World Series ring as part of a giveaway. The Astros have lost four of their past six games, all at home, with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Giants each winning two of three from the reigning World Series champions.
The Astros on Wednesday threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning with runners on first and second and nobody out, but leadoff hitter Mauricio Dubon hit into a first-pitch double play. Bregman followed with the biggest spark in two days for the home team, whacking a two-run home run into the Crawford Boxes in left field to tighten the gap to 3-2 against Giants starter Logan Webb.
