Davide Ghiotto of Italy shattered the world record in the men's 10,000 metres, while American speedster Jordan Stolz continued his undefeated streak in the men's 1,000 metres at the World Cup speedskating event in Calgary. The Calgary Oval, renowned for its fast ice, provided a stage for exceptional performances despite its aging infrastructure.
A world record tumbled and a dominant streak continued on the second day of World Cup speedskating in Calgary. Italy's Davide Ghiotto etched his name in history with a world record -breaking performance in the men's 10,000 metres, securing the gold medal at the renowned Olympic Oval. Meanwhile, American speedster Jordan Stolz , who remains undefeated in World Cup races this season across three distances, claimed victory in the men's 1,000 metres.
The Calgary Oval, celebrated for its 'fastest ice in the world,' has consistently produced world records since its inauguration in 1987 for the Winter Olympics. Despite aging infrastructure with leaky pipes, the track continues to reward athletes with exceptional speed. The 37-year-old floor requires a significant upgrade, with requests for $60 million for a new floor and other renovations submitted to federal and provincial governments. However, the legacy of the Oval shone brightly during the two days of racing, with 20 skaters achieving personal bests and three track records, along with Ghiotto's world record, being set. 'It's pretty quick. Faster than usual,' commented Stolz, echoing the sentiments of many skaters. Ghiotto crossed the finish line in 12 minutes, 25.69 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 12:30.74 set by Sweden's Nils van der Poel at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where Ghiotto secured bronze. 'I worked a lot for this day. Maybe a dream come true because three years ago I (finished) behind van der Poel doing the world record,' said the 31-year-old, expressing his elation. 'The feeling was very good today. Maybe here on this track, it is a little bit easier than sea level because the ice is very, very fast.' Ghiotto, a back-to-back 10k world champion since Beijing, is a strong contender for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics in his home country. 'One year is very long and I'm one year older next year,' he acknowledged. 'In this sport, every day is different. Today I win, but tomorrow I don't know. I want to come back to training a lot for the Olympic Games.' The host Canadian team fought valiantly but remained off the podium for a second consecutive day. Graeme Fish of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, achieved his fastest 10k at the Oval, surpassing his bronze-medal time from last year's world championship to finish fifth. 'I literally gave everything I could. I wish I could have had a little bit in the tank at the end,' Fish said. 'It's probably the fastest ice we've had here in a while and it's obviously good. The Oval is going through some tough times right now. This just shows that the ice can be really fast.' Calgary's Ted-Jan Bloemen, a silver medalist at the 2024 World Championships, held a medal position for 15 of the 25 laps before fading to 10th. Sprinter Laurent Dubreuil from Levis, Quebec, displayed the fastest opening lap in the 1,000 metres but couldn't maintain that pace to dethrone Stolz. Dutchman Jenning De Boo challenged Stolz's streak with faster split times, but the 20-year-old surged ahead for the victory and a track-record time of one minute, 5.91 seconds. 'When I went to the line, I figured I would be able to have good enough pace in the second lap to be able to stay with his time, or at least beat it, which is what I was able to do,' Stolz explained. Stolz from West Bend, Wisconsin, aims to extend his undefeated streak in the 500 metres on Sunday. He desires to maintain an unblemished record entering his home state competition next week in Milwaukee. 'I'm happy to get another one today, even though it's close,' he said. 'See if I can pull it off tomorrow and continue to try and do that in Milwaukee.' Joy Beune of the Netherlands claimed victory in the women's 1,500 metres, adding to her success from the previous day's 1,000 metres race. Racing concludes Sunday in Calgary with the men's and women's 500 metres and mass starts, along with team sprints.
