German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul says Europe has a market for more Canadian LNG, citing threats to supply chains from Russia's war on Ukraine and instability in the Middle East.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul says Germany wants more Canadian liquefied natural gas and that Europe has a market for it. In an interview with CTV Question Period airing Sunday, Wadephul told host Vassy Kapelos that of course there is a market for more Canadian LNG in Europe.
LNG Canada Expansion and German Demand
According to industry sources who spoke with CTV News, an announcement is coming next week on LNG Canada Phase 2. That expansion will see the facility double its production from current levels. Wadephul said Germany must diversify its energy supplies. He cited not only the Russian war against Ukraine but also threats in the Middle East.

He pointed to the Strait of Hormuz and the recent situation around Bab-el-Mandeb, saying supply chains are under threat. Russia's war on Ukraine has prompted Germany to strategically change direction on energy supply, moving away from a dependence on Russia. Wadephul said Russian attacks on NATO territory have reached a new level. Wadephul said Germany is looking to Africa, for instance Nigeria, but also to Canada and the United States.
He added that Germany must speed up changing its whole energy infrastructure into a new renewable system. He described this as the future. Wadephul said the geopolitical circumstances are another very strong argument to do all of that faster.

Germany's Renewable Energy Turn
Asked whether the acceleration toward more renewables will impact Germany's trade with Canada on conventional energy sources such as LNG, Wadephul emphatically said no. He explained that the transition still takes some time and that renewables are something Germany should exchange with Canada. Wadephul said Germany has a huge need for gas, calling LNG a very needed source. He said there is also space for Canada to work with Germany on renewable energy technology.
The record on renewable energy cooperation is mixed. A 2022 deal signed under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, has been plagued by delays and missed its initial target of starting exports by 2025. Still, leaders of both countries continue to pledge their support for the program. Canada and Germany announced an agreement in May between Ksi Lisims LNG on British Columbia's West Coast and Germany's state-owned Securing Energy for Europe.
The deal covers the purchase of one million tonnes per annum of LNG for up to 20 years. Deliveries are expected to begin by the early 2030s. European officials have expressed strong interest in Canadian LNG for years. In separate interviews on CTV Question Period in 2024, both Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and then-Polish president Andrzej Duda said they would be interested in purchasing Canadian LNG.
Canadian LNG Projects and Export Push
Under Trudeau, the government insisted a business case for those exports to Europe did not exist. The government led by Prime Minister Mark Carney says the opposite. Canada has one major LNG export terminal up and running, LNG Canada, located in Kitimat, B.C. , which began shipping Canadian gas in summer 2025.
There are currently a half a dozen other LNG export projects in the works. Wadephul in his interview also discussed Russia's escalating aggression towards European countries supporting Ukraine. He also addressed recent comments by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Von der Leyen said she would like to explore the possibility of Canada becoming the first associate member of the European Union bloc.
