Germany's coronavirus infection rate has edged up from earlier this month and people should stay at home as much as they can despite a lockdown relaxation last week, the head of the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases said on Tuesday.

BERLIN - Germany’s coronavirus infection rate has edged up from earlier this month and people should stay at home as much as they can despite a lockdown relaxation last week, the head of the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases said on Tuesday.

The education ministers of Germany’s 16 federal states agreed on Tuesday that schools across the country would slowly reopen classes for all grades until the summer holidays, although pupils would have to work and learn in smaller groups. Wieler urged Germans to practise rigorous social distancing despite a slight easing of restrictions on public life.

But a government spokesman on Monday already tried to lower expectations ahead of the talks, saying a meeting on May 6, when Merkel and state premiers are scheduled to discuss progress again, was more likely to yield important decisions.
