Björn Höcke, the party’s lead candidate in the state, is a standard bearer for the more extreme AfD elements. He has been fined for repeatedly using banned Nazi slogans and called the Holocaust memorial in Berlin “a monument of shame.” If the AfD secures more than a third of the seats in the state parliaments, it could potentially block major decisions such as judicial appointments.
