The decision means Germany’s domestic security services can continue treating the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as potentially extremist and keep the party under surveillance
Roman Reusch, member of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party, answers questions of journalists after the verdict of his party's trial at the Higher Administrative Court in Muenster, western Germany, on May 13, 2024. The party suffered a stinging defeat as the court threw out its bid to stop Germany's intelligence services from investigating it as a suspected right-wing extremist organization.
“The court finds there is sufficient evidence that the AfD pursues goals that run against the human dignity of certain groups and against democracy,” the judges wrote. “The establishment of this state - and that includes the BfV and the media - is being used to exclude us from democratic competition,” said the AfD’s co-leader, Alice Weidel, adding that the AfD would appeal.
That led some experts to suggest the court challenge was as much part of a communications strategy and a plan to gum up the institutions of the state as it was a legal strategy.
