Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is scheduled to meet with special counsel Jack Smith as part of the investigation into whether former President Donald Trump illegally interfered with the results of the 2020 election.
Smith will be interviewing Raffensperger for the first time since launching the two separate investigations into the former president — one regarding the mishandling of government records and the other about the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. The Washington Examiner confirmed Raffensperger’s interview with Smith’s prosecutors will occur on Wednesday in Atlanta.
The meeting is likely to focus on an hourlong phone conversation between Raffensperger and Trump in January 2021. In it, the former president asked him to"find 11,780 votes." The audio came to light during a hearing of the Jan. 6 investigation in 2022, in which Rep. Adam Schiff , a member of the investigation committee, played the recording.
Trump appeared to question Raffensperger on the call regarding his comments that no additional votes were found, claiming the election results were accurate.Trump warned Raffensperger of the danger of not reporting any tampering with the ballots. The former president claimed they were shredded and that the voting machines owned by Dominion Voting Systems were tampered with, saying failure to report is a “criminal offense.”“And you know, you can’t let that happen,” Trump said. “That’s a big risk.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis started an investigation over two years ago into Trump and his allies' activities. It is separate from the investigation and arrest led by the Justice Department regarding classified documents. Raffensperger testified before a Fulton County special purpose grand jury in June 2022, with other top aides assisting in the case as well.
