Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says she had to have a discussion with her 12-year-old son after they both received a racist text regarding her efforts to keep the city closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus
The investigation comes after 15 state lawmakers sent a letter to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr saying they were very concerned about the"hateful message" and requested his office"immediately investigate" to ensure it wasn't sent from a state employee.In a Wednesday night tweet, Bottoms said she received a text addressing her by the n-word and demanding,"just shut up and RE-OPEN ATLANTA!"The mayor shared the text message on Twitter.
"You have to live to fight another day, and you have to be able to be amongst the living to be able to recover."Disagreement over courses of action have been a theme during the pandemic, with residents in some states staging protests over the decision to shut down parts of their economies, while local leaders, governors and the federal government bicker over the best way forward.
