Mary Barra provided no details on how the automaker will respond to the tariffs, nor how they will affect GM, which has manufacturing facilities in Canada and Mexico as well as the U.S.

Mary Barra, CEO of the General Motors Company, speaks during the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., in May, 2022.chief executive officer Mary Barra says the automaker has plans to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25-per-cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico and has been in talks with the U.S. administration ahead of the expected Feb. 1 implementation date.

Ms. Barra said the company has been studying “multiple scenarios” to minimize the impact of tariffs on Canada and Mexico. “We do build trucks in Mexico and in Canada and in the United States. And so, we have the capacity in the United States to ship some of that. We also sell trucks globally, and so we can look at where the international markets are being sourced from.”GM employs more than 5,000 people in Ontario. The company makes Silverado pickups in Oshawa, engines and transmissions in St.

Ms. Barra said she has been “pro-active” in lobbying the Trump administration and Congress about the impact of tariffs. “And in our conversations, we have stressed the importance of a strong manufacturing sector and American leadership in advanced technologies,” she said. “We believe the President wants to use policy and regulations in ways that will strengthen, not harm domestic manufacturers like GM.

“Think about this: 70 per cent of all the auto parts we make in Michigan go directly to our neighbours … The only winner in this equation is China. They would love nothing more than to watch us cripple America’s auto ecosystem all by ourselves. This is a matter of national security,” Ms. Whitmer said.
