Plans to wrap up operations at the South San Francisco plant have been in the works for more than 15 years, according to a statement shared with SFGATE. Genentech is now in the last stages of carrying out this plan, which means ending production in South San Francisco and letting go of more than 200 employees who work there.
The company has additional manufacturing facilities in Vacaville and Oceanside, as well as Hillsboro, Oregon. Laid-off employees who wish to stay with the company are encouraged to apply for positions at these sites. The roughly 265 employees who are being let go are receiving severance pay, extended health care coverage and career transition services, according to Genentech's statement.
