Army Gen. Mark Milley was confirmed by the Senate as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

By Michael R. Gordon July 25, 2019 7:03 pm ET Army Gen. Mark Milley was confirmed Thursday to serve as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in an 89-to-1 vote in the Senate.

As the nation’s top officer, Gen. Milley will serve as the principal military adviser to President Trump, who has taken a liking to the burly general. “We are not going to be intimidated into making stupid decisions,” he said, referring to himself and the chiefs of the military services. “We will give our best military advice regardless of consequences to ourselves.”

As defense secretary, Mr. Mattis had backed Air Force Chief of Staff David Goldfein for the chairman’s position. Mr. Trump’s decision to ignore Mr. Mattis’s advice is believed to have contributed to Mr. Mattis’s resignation, current and former Pentagon officials say.
