‘Day after day, the staffing crisis in our hospitals is getting worse,” Nickel Belt MPP says
“Day after day, the staffing crisis in our hospitals is getting worse,” the Nickel Belt MPP said. “Patients are in pain, waiting hours in ERs, having surgeries delayed again and again, and even being sent home when they desperately need care. Health care workers and experts are literally begging the provincial government for help. Workers are exhausted and demoralized.”
Her call to action was echoed Thursday by two hospital unions representing some 70,000 health-sector workers. The Ontario Council of Hospital Unions and SEIU Healthcare have sent a letter to Premier Doug Ford, call for a number of actions the government could take to reduce labour shortages. Gélinas said the Ontario NDP “wholeheartedly supports” the solutions laid out by OCHU and SEIU Healthcare, citing several strategies highlighted in the unions’ letter to Ford, including to actively recruit, retain and return health care workers, increase wages, convert part-time and casual work into full-time jobs, and address violence against health-care workers.
In the news release issued by Gélinas’ office, she cites Cathryn Hoy, registered nurse and president of the Ontario Nurses’ Association, comparing Ontario’s health-care system to the Titanic, “and we are sinking, fast.”
