The fire was upgraded to a fourth-alarm blaze around noon as more crews were called in and smoke continued to fill the skies around downtown Vancouver.

Arliss Renwick, an architect who works out of a building on Abbott Street, was first alerted to the fire through the presence of smoke.Article content Olena Krevenets, a Ukrainian woman living in Vancouver, said she was shocked to see fire break out while she was taking a walk with her husband. Claire Niebergal, a tenant in a building across the street, smelled the fire before she saw the force of its flames.
