Gas prices in B.C.: What to know about cheap gas, jerrycans and more

Almost everyone can remember last month, last year or perhaps last decade when gas prices seemed, well, quaint and reasonable compared to today’s figures.

While the wholesaler’s price and the taxes are non-negotiable, retailers do have some free rein within that last nine cents of the price. So a retailer might decide to forgo part or all of their mark-up to entice drivers to fuel up at their station instead of the one across the street. It also explains why morning rush hours — when more people are likely to be on the roads and needing gas — will be when more expensive gas prices posted.

What about gas stations located farther off the highway? Maybe. McTeague noted that gas stations all pay within a few cents of each other wholesale, so any variations are up to the retailer. The only guidelines you must follow are for safety reasons such as proper storage and transportation of the gas.

• Do not overfill the jerry can. Rule of thumb is to fill 95 per cent of the way, allowing room for fuel expansion.• Secure the jerry can in your vehicle’s trunk before transporting to prevent spills.
