The loss of Chabot means rookie defenceman Tyler Kleven will make his NHL debut against the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night.
“I don’t think people understand how many injuries this guy plays through on a nightly basis when a lot of guys in the league wouldn’t play. He continues to push himself. But, if we’re saying he can’t play, then he can’t play.”
“It’s going to be close , but what are you going to do?” Smith said. “At this time of year, you don’t have time to worry about it. The good thing is is playing as good as I’ve seen him play. This is a big hit because Chabot has averaged 24 minutes and 58 seconds of ice-time per game this season. You don’t just replace those kind of minutes and the club is already without newly acquired defenceman Jakob Chychrun for the balance of the year.
The club’s 44th pick overall in the 2020 NHL draft wrapped up his season at the University of North Dakota last weekend and skated with the Senators for the first time last Friday. He took repetitions in Wednesday’s skate with veteran Nick Holden and they’ll start together versus the Flyers. Kleven has had a week to get his feet wet. He’s fortunate that former UND teammates Jake Sanderson and Shane Pinto are here to help with the transition. He knows he’ll be nervous and will focus on just trying to make the right decisions.
