Dorion told reporters he’s been in daily contact with Pinto’s New York-based agent Lewis Gross to try to get a deal in place. The belief is the two sides aren’t far apart on a contract, but heading into Wednesday night there was still work to be done to get Pinto to sign on the dotted line.
There is little doubt a deal with the 22-year-old Pinto is going to get done and both sides hope it happens in the near future. As TSN’s Darren Dreger noted on Insider Trading Tuesday night, the Senators consider Pinto will play a “key role” in helping this club get to the playoffs this season. Instead, the Senators want to get a contract off the books without taking a player in return. The club may have to sweeten a trade to get a team to take a contract off the books and that’s the most likely way to solve this.
