The sale of the Senators is getting close to the finish line.

While there was talk amongst the suitors for the Senators as work continued through the weekend, they’d know by Tuesday who would receive preferred-bidder status, sources say officials at GSP, the Melnyk estate and NHL are closing on that point, but there wasn’t a resolution.

The Kimel family has brought in Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, as a partner in their bid. He’s making a meaningful financial investment in their bid, and we’re told “the Kimels want this team badly”.Article content Some have suggested the delay might be the result of GSP trying to see if some of the bidders are willing to work together to make the ownership of the Senators stronger. The people at GSP are working with the Senators’ three-person board of directors — Sheldon Plener, Larry Zeifman and John Miszuk — plus NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly.

A “cap table” outlines how the buyer plans to finance the purchase of the franchise. For example, if someone wants to bid $900 million, they had to show both the banker and NHL where the money is coming from. Those involved in the process are wondering exactly what’s happening with the Sparks bid. First, sprinter Donovan Bailey confirmed he was part of the bid Friday. On Saturday, comedian Russell Peters took to social media to declare he’s also become a partner.
