\u0022With just six wins in 18 games to start the season, the Senators need to take a step back to try to dig themselves out of this hole slowly.\u0022

As they prepared to play the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Arena, the Senators were trying to shake off a 5-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday to start this four-game trip and figure out a way to put 60 minutes together to give themselves a chance to win.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The Senators are taking it from everywhere and, make no mistake, they’re their own worst critics. With 10 losses in the last 12 games, they know that the way they’re performing isn’t acceptable and not what was expected when the season started in October. “Whenever someone scores a goal it’s important to play the next shift the way you want to play and in our structure,” alternate captain Claude Giroux said. “We have a good game plan, we just have to execute out there.”

“You’ve got to be able to turn the page and go right back to what you do. For us, that’s playing as a team and not getting rattled if something bad happens. That’s hard to do when you’re struggling but, in saying that, you’ve just got to go out and play the next shift.” “For us, we just have to worry about Vegas right now and that’s how you get confidence. You start with one game and you build off it. The last two games, it’s just not good enough.”
