Steve Staios has had a first-hand look at the Ottawa Senators since he took on the role of president of hockey operations just over a month ago.
Now, with the added duties of interim general manager after owner Michael Andlauer sent Pierre Dorion packing Wednesday after the NHL announced the Senators will forfeit a first-round pick for the botched Evgenii Dadonov deal, Staios has a lot on his plate. That includes roster moves, speaking to other teams about trades, injury updates, managing the salary plus regular interaction with coach D.J. Smith and his staff regarding decisions.
“I love that dynamic with him and the coaching staff. He’s got a huge amount of respect with the players. And, he’s got a keen eye for the game. He’s passionate and competitive so I really like adding that support for D.J. and his staff. Then with the addition of Matt Nichol, we already have a strong staff on the medical and conditioning sides, it’s just somebody there to be able to integrate it, take a lead and be a resource. It’s important.
