Ottawa dropped back to six points out of the last playoff position in the NHL\u0027s Eastern Conference.
After closing out March with a 7-7-1 record in 15 games, the Senators started the final stretch of the National Hockey League regular season with a visit by their arch-rivals. With only six games left now, the only way Ottawa can stay in the playoff race is to keep winning.
“They checked really hard,” said coach D.J. Smith. “We played the right way wire-to-wire. I liked our effort. There’s probably a couple we’d like back, but we had our chances to score and the goalie made the saves. Maple Leafs defenceman Mark Giordano and Senators right-winger Drake Batherson battle for the puck in the first period. The Senators went back to the 22-year-old Sogaard to start in net after Talbot allowed four goals on 11 shots in the 5-4 overtime victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. Sogaard didn’t have much of an act to follow, but the Senators needed a better effort in net and unfortunately he wasn’t great, either.
Michael Bunting opened the scoring with his 22nd of the season at 1:23 of the second on just the sixth shot Sogaard faced. Ottawa defenceman Nick Holden knocked down a puck, but centre Ridly Greig couldn’t get a handle on it and Bunting beat Sogaard with a low shot, bringing the Leafs’ faithful in the stands out of their seats.
