With the Senators set to drop the puck in six days on the road against Carolina, the club’s top centre wasn’t on the ice Wednesday for a skate at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro, N.S.The 24-year-old Norris won’t suit up in Thursday’s exhibition game against the Winnipeg Jets at the Canada Life Centre and there are no guarantees we’ll see him against the Montreal Canadiens at the Canadian Tire Centre in the final pre-season game on Saturday night.

“It’s a little bit of a setback, but we’re hopeful that he plays Saturday,” coach D.J. Smith told TSN 1200’s Gord Wilson following the club’s skate on Wednesday. “He won’t play tomorrow, but we’re very hopeful that he plays Saturday.” Throughout the off-season all we’ve talked about is the fact a healthy Norris would bring this club depth at centre with Tim Stutzle, Pinto and Mark Kastelic down the middle.

There has been speculation Gross is looking for a two-year deal worth $2.5 million season on Pinto’s behalf. The Senators would like a settlement closer to the two-year, $4.2 million average annual value that centre Morgan Frost signed with the Philadelphia Flyers. The belief in league circles is Pinto will settle for a contract similar to the two years, $2.35 million per season that Alexis Lafreniere signed with the New York Rangers.

Named Ottawa’s president of hockey operations last Friday, Steve Staios told ESPN’s Ray Ferraro and TSN’s Darren Dreger on “The Ray and Dregs podcast” Wednesday he’ll leave any questions regarding contract negotiations up to Dorion to answer.
