Tuesday was one of those days. The 31-year-old winger first crossed paths with Jones as a 16-year-old with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires during the 2008-09 campaign. Jones and Smith were associate coaches on head coach Bob Boughner’s staff, and spent a lot of time with the players. Watson has spent nearly a decade of his hockey career with Jones as part of it. A player can have a heart-to-heart chat with Jones and know they can trust him to be a close confidant. If the player doesn’t want that discussion to go anywhere, it won’t.
“Even in my time here he’s a guy that I go to when my games not going well or mentally you get into a rut. He’s got such a great outlook on life and the game. To have him have to bear something like that it hurts and it feels pretty . All we can do is be supportive and try to bring a good attitude.”“It’s something that makes you think and makes you appreciate what you’re doing in life on a day-to-day basis,” said Watson.
