Daniel Alfredsson is the first player from the modern Ottawa Senators franchise to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

“It was fun, no question. We had a great time,” Alfredsson told this newspaper Friday after receiving his ring. “We had a couple of beers, we told stories, we played a little bit of cards . Like I said earlier, the best part of this weekend is sharing it with family and friends.”Article content

“Surreal is the best word to describe it,” Alfredsson said. “I guess it’s humbling. It’s been a few months since we knew about it, but, with this weekend coming up, and having family and friends around, it’s really starting to heat me.Article contentA view of the Hall of Fame plaque for former Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson. The road to get to this weekend haven’t been easy and there were bumps along the way, but upon reflection the good times far outweighed the challenges.

“It was a turbulent year, there’s no question about it,” Alfredsson said. “We struggled, we couldn’t win games, the coaches get fired, and as players you feel guilty. It was tough. At Christmas, I remember talking to my parents and saying, ‘I don’t know if I can do this much longer.’ Not bad for a guy who wasn’t even sure he’d make the team when training camp was held at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. Alfredsson started the season on a line with winger Martin Straka, who had come to Ottawa from the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the two were able to build good chemistry.Article content

The key to Alfredsson’s success was his ability to play at both ends. His 444 goals rank 65th in NHL history. He’s No. 2 in that category among Swedish players behind former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin, who had 564 goals in 1,264 games.
