The Buckeyes junior receiver opted out of the Rose Bowl on Monday and declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. Would you like to see him in a Browns uniform next season?
OSU WR Garrett Wilson celebrates a TD catch during first half action Saturday afternoon, November 20, 2021, during the game between Ohio State and Michigan State in Columbus.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Baker Mayfield has already thrown with Garrett Wilson. The Browns quarterback and the Ohio State receiver both attended Lake Travis High School just outside Austin, Texas, playing high-level high school football as the foundation for high-level football careers.
We love underdogs and three-star recruits who hit it big. But there’s a lot to be said for maximizing elite talent. If you thought Wilson would be great, as Mayfield did, you were right. Wilson made sure you were right.declaring Monday that he was opting out of the Rose Bowl and entering the 2022 NFL DraftIt’s not that Mayfield, as the Browns quarterback, needs a No. 1 receiver. It’s that the Browns as an organization need a No. 1 receiver. Kevin Stefanski as a play caller needs a No.
The Browns remain in a playoff race, and it’s a wonderful thing that the full attention of fans hasn’t turned to the draft before the new year hits. But we also can see how badly the Browns need a No. 1 receiver to help fix their passing game. Joe Burrow is playing some great quarterback in Cincinnati, but what Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins offer him as young receiver targets elevates that franchise. The Browns need a version of that, regardless of the quarterback next year.
As for worries that Wilson would be wasted in Cleveland ... I’d argue he’s more likely to be the player to get them over the top. The Browns have to get quarterback figured out, and hundreds of thousands of words will be spilled on that subject. But they also need a No. 1 weapon to make that quarterback better. The minute that Wilson would put on a Browns jersey, he would become the best part of their passing attack.
I have some doubts about Stefanski utilizing a No. 1 receiver in his offensive system, but I think those would be lessened with better quarterback play. He opened up the offense against Green Bay on Saturday because, as he said Monday, the matchup called for it. We saw a lot more three-receiver looks and fewer formations with three tight ends, and the Browns ran better from that.
