Game of Thrones doesn't just have big-budget warfare to offer, but warmth and wit via nparts

One of the most memorable and compelling scenes in the first season of Game of Thrones is a simple conversation that involves no sex, bloodshed or conspiratorial intrigue — just two people in a room, talking about life.

As it happens, this scene was never intended to be part of the season. It came about thanks to a happy accident — or a failure of planning, depending on how you look at it. “Our inexperience showed when, in the first season, our shows came in really short,” explained David Benioff, one of the co-creators of Game of Thrones, to Deadline many years ago. “For HBO, it’s supposed to be around 52 or 54 minutes, and we had a bunch of episodes clocking in at 40 minutes.

Benioff and Weiss probably don’t worry much about budget anymore. As Game of Thrones entered its eighth and final season, I imagine HBO was quite willing to underwrite any battle scene the writers and directors wanted — and you only have to glance at the running times of the last few episodes of the season for assurance that these guys aren’t scrambling to pad the action with supplementary material any longer.

We tend to talk about Game of Thrones as a story of agonizing betrayals and hair-pulling turnabouts, where rooting for someone agreeable is punished by their drawn-out torture and the most tentative investment in an outcome is cause for it to be thrown cruelly in your face.
