The Houston government has fired another salvo in the ongoing skirmish between the province and Halifax Regional Municipality over the housing crisis.Bill 329 blindsided the city last week with no notice. The purpose of this thing was to fix the housing crisis, but it was basically a hostile takeover of all development in Halifax.

While the city was busy trying to find more parks for tent encampments for the winter, the province came in and kneecapped them with legislation that would limit their ability to govern all development. If residents aren’t happy about the demolition of a heritage property for a high-rise building that doesn’t fit in with the character of their neighbourhood, they will not have an opportunity to express their concerns. It will just be too bad for them. Fast development by the province will trump their wishes.

The province believes this will speed up the construction of new housing, which it says has been too slow due to development approvals. Once this bill is passed, the province will likely use this model to override other municipalities in the province to get housing built faster.
