There seems to be no end to the rot in Canadian sports. The spotlight was on gymnastics this week as former athletes testified about abuse before the House ...

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSThe spotlight was on gymnastics this week as former athletes testified about abuse before the House of Commons committee investigating the safety of women and girls in sports.

According to one athlete advocate who testified this week, there have been complaints of maltreatment in soccer, bobsled, skeleton, track and field, cross-country skiing, water polo, swimming, artistic swimming, boxing, canoe/kayak, rowing and figure skating. According to testimony, one gymnast had her legs pressed into “overspills” until her hamstring snapped and tore away from the bone. When she cried, the coach told her to shut up. If this is true, it’s not training. It’s torture. This is why it’s not just a sports problem or a gymnastics problem. It is a human rights problem. This is also why gymnasts are calling for an independent judicial inquiry into human rights violations against all athletes.

And in most sports, they are. Most coaches are good people who don’t abuse athletes. They volunteer their time and skills for the good of the kids and the community. Another gymnastics coach and former Olympic hopeful in Quebec was charged with sexual abuse of boys and child pornography involving eight boys, ages six to 12.

That time and money could be put to better use by proceeding with a governance overhaul of all sports in Canada. Like lawyers and doctors, national sports organizations need disciplinary bodies that protect athletes and coaches who do not abuse.
