Moreno, the promising 21-year-old catcher, is set to join the Blue Jays for their three-game series in Detroit with Danny Jansen out with a hand injury.

Moreno, the promising 22-year-old catcher, is set to join the Blue Jays for their three-game series in Detroit. The news has yet to officially be announced but was first reported by Miami’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes and has since been confirmed by the Star.

Moreno has been with the Jays organization since 2017. He is ranked the No. 7 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline and Baseball America. The product of Venezuela is generally considered the best player the Jays have in the minors, and he’s expected to be the catcher of the future, even though the Jays have plenty of depth at the big-league level in Alejandro Kirk and Danny Jansen.

Even if Moreno isn’t fully developed, Jansen’s setback creates a perfect opportunity for the slugging catcher to receive a crash course on the Jays pitching staff at the big-league level. He’ll be attending pre-game meetings with his pitchers and coaching staff while participating in regular video sessions. That should prove useful down the road when Moreno is ready to take on a more substantial role.

Despite the arrival of Moreno, the Jays are still expected to use Kirk as their primary catcher. Kirk, who is only more than a year older than Moreno, is batting .376 with 13 extra-base hits and 14 RBIs since May 2 and is starting to make a case that he should be named to the all-star team in July.
