The Moab Police Department is accused of disregarding signs of domestic violence between the 22-year-old and her boyfriend in the weeks before her death.

Gabby Petito's mother Nichole Schmidt speaks during a news conference Thursday in Salt Lake City. Gabby Petito's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging that police failed to recognize their daughter was in a life-threatening situation last year when officers investigated a fight between her and her boyfriend. The 22-year-old was killed a few weeks later.

This police camera video provided by the Moab Police Department shows Gabby Petito talking to a police officer after police pulled over the van she was traveling in with her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, on Aug. 12, 2021.

Brian Laundrie is seen talking to a police officer during the 2021 traffic stop weeks before his girlfriend, Gabby Petito, was found dead.Schmidt, other family members and their team of lawyers stood in front of an old picture of Petito smiling in a slot canyon at a Thursday press conference in Salt Lake City.

It lays blame for Petito’s death on the city’s police officers, who did not issue a domestic violence citation after a bystander called to report conflict between Petito and Laundrie. In doing so, the lawsuit claims officers disregarded signs of violence they should have been trained to notice.
