ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Premier Andrew Furey called some of the contents of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax letter sent to some premiers on Tuesday “new information.”, said the federal government made it clear from the beginning of the carbon pricing system in 2019 that it was “open to working with any and all provinces and territories that want to establish their own pricing systems,” adding, “as long as they meet or exceed the national benchmark.
“It was quite a sclerotic response from the federal environment minister when we tried to work with him when these were coming in, and was told, ‘If you can't comply, then we're just going to push in the federal backstop,’” Furey said. “We’ve tried that in the past, and again, were met with incredible resistance from the federal environment minister, and were told that, in no uncertain terms, if we did not comply … then they weren't interested,” Furey said.He said the province will reflect on Trudeau’s letter.
