Funeral services planned this week for former Galveston-Houston archbishop Joseph Fiorenza
Fiorenza, a Beaumont native and the son of Italian immigrants, served as bishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston from 1985 to 2006. He became archbishop in 2004 when Pope St. John Paul II elevated the diocese to an archdiocese.who tirelessly worked to overcome racism in the community, said Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, who succeeded Fiorenza in 2006.
Hundreds of priests, including more than a dozen bishops from across the country, are expected to attend services, according to the archdiocese.
