Our synagogue service was quickly moved from the windowed sanctuary to the bomb shelter of the basement. We prayed as more sirens went off.
On Saturday, we woke up to sirens. In the hallway, neighbours were sheltering and trying to get information about the booms we were hearing along with the sirens. I’m a Canadian rabbi, spending the Sukkot holiday with family in Jerusalem. This wasn’t what I expected.
We decided not to discuss any details until we could listen to the news after the conclusion of the Sabbath. Our son and daughter-in-law discussed with our grandkids what was happening only after they all returned home, and at a level of knowledge appropriate to different ages. As a Canadian, I’m grateful for the support offered to Israel by our country: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, all the federal leaders, many parliamentarians, Premier Doug Ford and other provincial premiers. It is important to not be alone. If you have Jewish friends, neighbours, colleagues or acquaintances — or others who care about Israel — please reach out to them.Next, we learned about the Air Canada suspension of our return flight.
The news continued to be disconcerting. At our local synagogue, we recited psalms for times of crisis. Some young guys were in uniform, getting in some personal prayers before heading to combat duty. Announcements included the names of two young people connected to our congregation who were killed and one taken captive. The mood was grim; it was clear that a major ground conflict was coming.
