Through the 2000s, James coached York University’s soccer team, while secretly fighting a crack cocaine addiction. In 2009, he resigned; he’d been through two unsuccessful stints in rehab, and the university had removed him as head of the soccer program. This failed, as James missed the one-year window to file appropriate paperwork. He turned to the courts, arguing that through the fog of crack cocaine use, he had been unable to do the necessary work and was unable to tell that he had been mistreated by York. The court disagreed with James.Article content

Over the course of his career, he got caught up in a bribery scandal: In 1986, James and four other players agreed to split $100,000 to throw a game against North Korea in Singapore; the four others were charged and James received immunity for acting as a Crown witness, the LA Times reported at the time. James has said he returned his share of the money.Article content

“We need that as a declaration so we can start treating people like myself with the dignity and the respect and quality and the fairness we deserve.” For 13 years, The Mail on Sunday reports, James has been unemployed, and without a home for six. Since moving back to the U.K., shortly before the pandemic began, James has slept on cardboard at Charing Cross, a London train station, and at Westminster Cathedral. Recently, he found a room in a hostel in Holborn, a district in London.
