In my past two decades of writing this farm column, occasionally some of my writings and musings, all based in fact, seem to parallel a plot episode of CBS rural TV nostalgia staple “The Andy Griffith Show” and the fictitious town of Mayberry.

The town mechanic I use near our farm is Elmer “Skip” Buzbee, who is 71 and has worked in a garage since age 17. He owns Skip’s Repair Shop in North Judson. When I chatted with him last week about the life expectancy of autos, he had much to share from his own experiences in the past 54 years. The 2015 Buick Enclave I drive, which I purchased new in September 2014, has more than 359,000 “reporter-generated miles” on the odometer, and Skip is the wizard who keeps it running smooth.

Instead, she learned a small feral kitten had been chased by a stray town dog and ran up and inside the car’s engine area to escape the canine. Seeing all the commotion and the car hoods open, mechanic Skip, whose shop is just across the street, came over to investigate and assist. He recommended the car be brought across the street and placed on a lift so he could use a long rod to poke the kitten to vacate the car engine area, which was designed so compact, no hand could even reach in to dislodge the scaredy-cat.

Skip has continued to be a gracious host to the kitty, providing food, water and a litter box, and there are at times rare sightings, including a recent photo I managed to snap with my cellphone.
