In what was perhaps the first official “hockey heartbreak” in Dallas history, the up-and-coming 1997 Dallas Stars — featuring a 26-year-old Mike Modano, a 24-year-old Derian Hatcher and a 23-year-old Jere Lehtinen — had tied for the second-best record in the league before taking on the plucky Oilers in the opening round.

The Stars once again dispatched the Avalanche in a seven-game conference finals series the following season but requiring a little more oomph in a closer Game 7. After their sizzling hot stretch from 1997-2000, Dallas won just two playoff series over the next seven seasons. The new wave of Marty Turco, Brenden Morrow and Steve Ott had arrived, but weren’t quite ready to make waves yet.
