“I think that you only get a couple chances in your life and career to tell stories that you feel are so, so important, and have such gravity.”

, Chiara, now 20, grew up in between New Mexico and Los Angeles with a single mom whom she calls her best friend; lately, she’s been living even more nomadically, jetting between filming locations in Canada and her current home base in L.A. She has marked her recent coming of age in increasingly more interesting and nuanced roles, and that’s been intentional.

With these leading parts, Chiara has also segued into characters with more dramatic and heavy storylines. Tifani’s experiences are horrifying and personal; author Jessica Knoll revealed in a 2016 essay forthat she was also sexually assaulted as a teenager, that those parts were not fiction. As depictions of rape on-screen become increasingly more frequent, there’s more responsibility than ever on creators and actors to portray traumatic things with the gravitas they deserve.

On set, she trusted the filmmakers to show what happens in a way that challenges people in the right way, and to give her the support and safety she needed to film those scenes. “I never once questioned, ‘Do I feel comfortable where I am? Do I feel like I’m being taken advantage of? Do I feel like this is being done incorrectly?’” she says.
