Honda Motor Company is a Japanese icon. Established in 1948, it is the largest producer of internal combustion engines and the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, a title it has held since 1959. It is also the eighth-largest automobile manufacturer in the world. And it all started shortly after the Second World War with a need to get the country moving.
Those surplus motors paved the way for Honda’s first engine design, which was the first product to bear the “Honda” name in 1948. Nicknamed “Bata-Bata” for the sound it made, the Type-A engine used a tear-drop-shaped fuel tank inspired by aluminum hot water bottles. The tanks were much easier and faster to manufacture, an important consideration for Soichiro.
Honda would continue to develop its engines for farming and agriculture, wherever they would be of use to people, and to get them more mobile. Soichiro wanted his inventions to help people all over the world.The company’s first full-fledged motorcycle, the Dream D-Type, launched in 1949 with a channel frame made from pressed steel plate and the world’s first use of a two-speed semi-automatic transmission. But it wasn’t until the Super Cub made its debut in the U.S.
