The 48-year-old husband and father was shot in a Peel Region coffee shop Monday afternoon.
Toronto Police Services Const. Andrew Hong’s colleagues spoke with soft voices Monday evening as they described a kind, gentle officer whose life ended in a shocking daytime shooting. On Monday, Hong took a break from a motorcycle training session with fellow officers in Peel Region to grab a bite at a Tim Horton’s coffee shop.
Jon Reid, the current Toronto Police Union president, said late Monday that the incident provides a “stark reminder of how this work can result in members paying the ultimate sacrifice. We all owe Andrew our respect and gratitude.” Standing before reporters and cameras late Monday, the voice of Toronto Police Chief James Ramer broke as he explained how he and Reid met with Hong’s family earlier in the day to inform them that their father, husband and son was gone.
On Monday evening after the press conference, Toronto Mayor John Tory announced on Twitter that the three-dimensional Toronto sign in Nathan Phillips Square will be dimmed in Hong’s honour and the flags of City Hall will fly at half-mast.
