Airports in Seattle, Chicago, New York, Detroit and other major cities all reported massive flight disruptions.
The once-in-a-decade winter storm stretched border to border – from Washington state to Maine, across the Midwest and down to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s hitting just as an estimated 112.7 million people are set to travel at least 50 miles through Jan. 2, according to automotive group AAA.Amtrak also canceled some trains in the Midwest and northern New England. In Canada, WestJet canceled all flights Friday at Toronto Pearson International Airport, beginning at 9 a.m.
Forecasters are expecting a bomb cyclone — when atmospheric pressure drops very quickly in a strong storm — to develop near the Great Lakes. That will stir up blizzard conditions, including heavy winds and snow.
