French brothers saved from burning building as crowd breaks their three\u002Dstorey fall
“We didn’t know what to do,” Walid told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “We wanted to break the door but it wasn’t possible.”
At first he said he heard screams and saw the fire, then he went to investigate along with four or five others, Walid said. After failing to break the door open, they shouted for the boys to jump from the height into their arms. While initially fearful of how the impact might go, Walid said that ”when they jumped, fear disappeared.”The local mayor, Éric Piolle, congratulated residents on the rescue, which he said underscored the city’s “tradition of solidarity and mutual help.
Walid says he hopes the terrifying event and heroic response change perceptions of the Villeneuve neighbourhood where the fire occurred — one made up of a large immigrant population. “We are told it’s a ‘sensitive’ neighbourhood,” he said, “but yesterday we showed we are here for each other, and we save each other.”
