Parks Canada officials and partners unveiled the name of the new campground in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Mkwesaqtuk is a Mi’kmaq word that describes a place or feature that distinctly changes to red. The expression would have been used to describe the coastal area that Acadians later called Cap-Rouge, on the western side of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Potlotek First Nation Chief Wilbert Marshall said the name celebrates a shared history and offers an opportunity to celebrate historic Mi’kmaw cultural and linguistic connections to the land.
Napoléon Chiasson, president of La Société Saint-Pierre, added that the name also recognizes the Acadian relationship to the area while celebrating Acadian history and culture.
