A Canadian freighter, the Manitoulin, was successfully rescued from a thick sheet of ice in Lake Erie after being trapped for several days. The U.S. Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard, and a team of dedicated personnel worked tirelessly to free the ship, ensuring the safety of its 17-member crew.

A freighter named the Manitoulin, a 663-foot Canadian vessel carrying 17 people, was successfully freed from the ice that had trapped it in Lake Erie for several days. The ship had become immobilized on Wednesday after completing a delivery of wheat in Buffalo, New York, and was en route back to Canada . It was initially stuck near Buffalo, New York, and a U.S. Coast Guard icebreaking ship began assisting in its rescue on Thursday.

On Saturday, a second Coast Guard ship arrived to bolster the effort, joined by a Canadian Coast Guard vessel. Together, they worked to guide the Manitoulin through approximately 20 miles of ice, eventually reaching open water. The Manitoulin sustained no damage during its ordeal, and its crew remained safe throughout. Lt. Kyle Rivera of the U.S. Coast Guard reported that the freighter was escorted through the icy passage from Buffalo to open water. He explained that the Manitoulin's journey isn't over yet. It still needs to navigate the remaining portion of Lake Erie and then ascend the Detroit and St. Clair rivers to reach its final destination in Canada, where it will spend the winter. Rivera assured that another Coast Guard cutter would accompany the Manitoulin through any remaining ice patches in those waterways.During the rescue operation, a Coast Guard helicopter was deployed to provide aerial surveillance and monitor the situation. A third U.S. Coast Guard ship was scheduled to arrive on Monday as a precautionary measure in case the Manitoulin had encountered further difficulties
