Dispute over documents has complicated plans to schedule the update, the Finance Minister said
Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland listens to a question from a reporter during a press conference at the National Press Theatre in Ottawa on Dec. 3, 2024.Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will release the Liberal government’s fall economic statement on Monday, Dec. 16, the minister announced Monday.
Ms. Freeland, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, has so far declined to say whether Ottawa’s deficit has stayed within her self-imposed fiscal anchors even after Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux said in a report that the government will likely miss those targets. Mr. Giroux released a report in October that said the deficit for the 2023-24 fiscal year is on track to be $46.8-billion, meaning the government will have missed its target, though he has cautioned that he cannot be certain.
It is also unclear how Ms. Freeland will account last month’s announcement of a two-month targeted elimination of the GST on some items and a plan to send most working Canadians a $250 cheque in April.
