FreeGuy VFX supervisor Bryan Grill shares his idea for a spinoff that would take place entirely within the animated world of Free City and its gameplay.
If Disney is interested in a Free Guy spinoff, VFX supervisor Bryan Grill has an idea that interestingly involves mostly gameplay. Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, 2021 was filled with surprises when it comes to movies, and few were likely as joyous as Free Guy. Last summer's breakout hit stars Ryan Reynolds as Guy, an affable bank teller who one day learns the shocking truth behind his surroundings: He's a non-playable character in a video game.
Free Guy won over audiences and critics on its way to $121.6 million domestically and $323.5 million worldwide, solid numbers for an original film in the midst of the pandemic. Therefore, it wasn't too surprising when Reynolds revealed online that Disney is interested in making a Free Guy 2. There hasn't been an official announcement just yet, with few updates emerging since then.
"Well, a sequel or a spinoff? I always thought it would be great to grab all the gameplay and just come up with a completely, just animated version of Free City. In some ways, you know, like we had all these environments, we have all these characters. Maybe we could level up with the look of the characters one more time and just go ahead and just do a complete spin-off where it's 90%, you know, gameplay and 10% live-action, perhaps rather than vice versa.
An animated spinoff of a live-action film would be an interesting twist, and one that perhaps suits Free Guy rather well. The movie prided itself on its individuality, and because of that, one has to hope that future installments set within its universe can continue to be just as inventive as the first film. A Free Guy movie set entirely within the video game world at its center could lead to some really exciting visuals, but it would need a story to back it up.
Still, Grill's idea shows there is a lot of potential when it comes to expanding the Free Guy universe. Free Guy did tie up its plot in a neat bow, but fictional worlds like this one lend themselves rather well to future story opportunities. While a traditional sequel can continue Guy's story, spinoffs like the one Grill proposed can build this world up to be something bigger than it is now. Right now, there might only be a sequel in play, but we'll have to see what happens. .
