“ was sitting in their backyard,” said Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward. “ father went inside to get the child a drink, heard screaming, came back out, saw blood and bite marks around the child’s neck, and saw the coyote in their backyard. So the coyote had attempted to drag the child off. was very, very serious, what could have been and thankfully the child is recovering. That situation was terrifying, unprovoked, unprecedented.
“A number of parents were concerned,” said Meed Ward. “Kids go to school. They walk through parks. Coyotes are typically active dawn and dust so early morning when kids are out and about so having a whistle that their kids can blow, if they spot one, is one step to help people protect themselves.” Meed Ward said all of those attacked and bitten — the other four victims were adults — underwent “very painful rabies treatment, which occurs over several weeks.”
One coyote implicated in three of the attacks, including the young boy, has already been killed by a certified wildlife technician, but the city is still on the look out for one or more animals in the other two attacks.Article contenttap here to see other videos from our teamWe are still trying to identify that animal and take care of it,” she said. “We’re not culling them. It’s very targeted. It’s unfortunate to have to kill an animal, nobody relishes that. Public safety comes first.
