Elon Musk denounced statewide lockdowns on Wednesday in tweets that echo right-wing opposition to stay-at-home orders.... [+]Musk tweeted “FREE AMERICA NOW” and “Give people their freedom back” on Tuesday night along with a link to a news article cheering on Texas’ decision to reopen.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO also replied “true” to a prominent pro-Trump twitter account that tweeted, “The scariest thing about this pandemic is not the virus itself, it’s seeing American so easily bow down & give up their blood bought freedom to corrupt politicians who promise them safety.” Musk’s tweets reflect President Donald Trump’s comments earlier this month calling for states to be “Musk has been criticized for his bizarre coronavirus response over the last few months. On March 16, 2020, he tweeted that antimalarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine were “worth considering” even though they had not been through extensive clinical trials. Days later he inaccurately predicted that there will be “probably close to zero new cases in the U.S., too, by end of April.

Musk appeared to change course at the end of March by promising to use his factories to make and donate hundreds of ventilators to New York and California hospitals.As initial stay-at-home orders begin to expire at the end of the month, some states, including Georgia and Texas, are slowly reopening businesses. Others, such as Virginia and Illinois, are taking the opposite approach and opting to lock down until at least the end of May.
